Open CASCADE Joins with Leading CAD Specialists to Build the New OMG CAD Services Standard
The Open CASCADE development team will contribute by creating an open-source implementation of CAD Services V1.0 based on Open CASCADE object libraries.

Paris, July 27, 2001 – Along with IBM, NASA, SDRC and Unigraphics Solutions, Open CASCADE has submitted a proposal to the Object Management Group on the definition and effective implementation of the CAD Services Standard.

The CAD Services Standard is an interface standard for mechanical CAD systems that enables the interoperability of CAD, CAM and CAE tools. The aim is to provide users of design and engineering systems the ability to seamlessly integrate best-in-class software across a wide variety of CAD/CAM and CAE applications through CORBA interfaces. These standard interfaces enable a distributed product design environment that includes a variety of CAD systems.

Open CASCADE aims to promote an open-source standard for 3D modeling solutions

As a voting member of the Object Management Group (OMG), Open CASCADE's goal is to firmly establish the status of its open-source software as a standard in the domain of 3D modeling solutions. Not only is a standard solution in Open Source an invaluable asset for the optimization of product design in industry by allowing a free choice of software supplier, it gives greater control of the application development process.

Open CASCADE S.A. is developing an open-source implementation of CAD Services V1.0 based on Open CASCADE object libraries. This implementation will bring Open CASCADE data structures and programming interfaces as close as possible to recognized standards.

Development specialists Mikhail Kazakov, Gilles Débarbouillé and Daniel Brunier-Coulin are Open CASCADE's technical representatives to OMG.

The Boeing Company, CFD Research Corporation, Dassault Systems, Ford Motor Company, the Franhofer Institute, GE, TranscenData, the Korean Advanced Institution of Science and Technology, MSC.Software Corporation and NIST support the proposal. Project submitters and supporters of the standard test the concepts and approach used in the submission.

The CAD Services V1.0 joint revised submission is available for consultation on the Web pages for the OMG Manufacturing Domain Task Force at: http://mfg.omg.org/mfgppe.htm#New.

About OMG

Founded in 1989, the Object Management Group is an 800-member international consortium of leading software and industrial companies dedicated to creating a component-based software marketplace based on standardized object software. OMG establishes industry guidelines and detailed object management specifications that provide a common framework for application development. This provides the basis for creating a heterogeneous computing environment across all major hardware platforms and operating systems.
