Becoming more and more open!

Guyancourt, June 16, 2011

The OPEN CASCADE Company (OCC) welcomes the constantly growing interest of both, its Customers and the Community, to Open CASCADE Technology (OCCT). OCC especially recognizes the constant efforts of its Customers and the growing strength of the Open Source Community to improve OCCT.

Consequently, OPEN CASCADE SAS is pleased to announce its decision to move towards open development of OCCT and to make all certified OCCT versions including intermediate maintenance versions publicly available to all OCCT users.

In the context of this project, OCC intends to gradually provide the entire Open Source Community with common tools and procedures for organizing collaborative work of our developers and external contributors.

We are pleased to take the first step and to publish maintenance release 6.5.1 expected by our Customers. From now on all further OCCT versions certified by OCC will be available through www.opencascade.org simultaneously to all OCC Customers and the Open Source Community.

Sincerely,
The OPEN CASCADE Team

Congratulations team!
Sincerely glad this (aligned access to releases) happened.

I would just stress that "being more open" is not a value in itself. What you have done is orientation towards customer and community needs, and that is important.

Thanks and good luck with new release model.
Roman

Great!

It's exciting to see that there's a mutual reaction of development team and community. Thanks a lot for the recent public release!

"In the context of this project, OCC intends to gradually provide the entire Open Source Community with common tools and procedures for organizing collaborative work of our developers and external contributors."

Where can we find the source repositories? Salome runs some git repositories, maybe you could take advantage of that internal infrastructure? Although, it seems to be a mirror of some internal CVS repositories that are still in active use.

Bryan,

Our source repository is not yet published.
Publishing a common repository is naturally one of our first objectives, and we are willing to work with all the community, including OCE, to achieve this goal.

Amazing decision! I hope by "common tools and procedures" you mean a public repository and bug tracker as a minimum, with a wiki as a possible bonus ;)

The OpenCascade Community Edition (OCE) project was recently launched in order to form a team of motivated volunteers able to bring improvements to OCCT. As a consequence, we, members of the OCE team, are of course pleased to hear about this important change from the OCC company regarding its relationship with the OCCT OS ecosystem. "Becoming more and more open" sounds good, many things are still to be set up to achieve it. We're looking forward to hearing more details about the 'how', and we're ready to help defining the conditions of this collaboration with the community.

For the OCE dev team,

Thomas
